62 FL Chop Rebuild 30
Gettin' real close to fire'n it up.....
Had a heck of a time getting this crankcase drain plug back in....
But finally....
Fired it up, took a bit to get the fuel flowing the way I wanted,
Not sure what that was about, like it had an air lock or something....
About 12 kicks and it finally fired up and ran....
Sounded pretty good, adjusted the idle screw....
But time to get it off the table and on the ground....
Brought out the trusty ol' hoist....
Unstrapped it from the table....
Lifted it free....
And pulled the table out from under...
Airborne....
Back on the ground....
Lookin' good....
Let's ride....
I did fire it up and rode it a little....
Need to fine tune the Linkert carb a bit....
And the timing feels a bit retarded, but it still
runs way better than I expected....
After that short check ride, decided to recheck the valves and the timing...
Let it sit overnight and cool down completely,
Then I collapsed the pushrod covers, and tied them in the up position....
I just use some pieces of mig wire to hold them up....
I let the bike sit overnight though, I want it completely cold to set the valve lash....
Pull the spark plugs, watch the pushrods, and, carefully rotate the motor until one cylinder's
lifters are centered in transition between exhaust and intake,
the other cylinder is now on the cam's base circle,
adjust that cylinder as needed.
In this case the lifters are solid lifters, and I adjust the pushrods as tight as I
can get them and still spin them with two fingers. I tend to get them pretty snug....
They needed adjustment, the intakes were a bit loose, and the exhausts were a bit too tight...
Then carefully rotate until the other cylinder's lifters are in the middle of transition...
After adjusting both cylinders,
I left it coming up on compression on the front cylinder,
checked the timing hole and got the mark centered in the hole...
Next was to adjust the timing, it was retarded a bit, quite a bit actually...
This cam likes a bit more advance than the standard HD markings on the flywheel,
I've added markings on the flywheel that I can see via the crankcase timing hole,
for the amount of advance this cam likes, about 5/8" BTDC
By rotating the magneto head back and forth as the points break open and close for the small lobe,
which is for the front cylinder, I can get it exactly on using this device from Morris Magnetos.
Went for about a 40 mile ride, tried to take a video with my iphone,
but it told me there was not enough memory for a vid....
While I was riding I kept pulling over and playing with the carb
adjustments, it was a bit rich initially, got that ironed out pretty well....
The shop is about 15 miles away, and I finished up in my home driveway....
Some things never change, the bike was already marking it's parking spot !!!
This leak looks like the front valve cover gasket leaks, so will have to change that...
Couldn't resist, put some more gas in and went out for another ride,
it's running really great, idles well, the shifting is a bit chunky, typical !!
And I need to "tune" that mousetrap, it's still a bit too heavy handed....
Parked it next to my oh-ten Dyna, my ultra dependable daily driver....
Immediately it was marking it's new parking spot....
Hah....
The filler pluig for the horseshoe oil tank had come loose and fallen in the battery well,
So the tank was speweing oil out and that's the main drip....
Put the plug back in and screwed it down tight, shouldn't happen again....
Same paint as I used on my '58 Chevy truck....
The kicker rubs against the rear exhaust pipe,
and the exhaust wrap didn't hold up too well....
So I re-wrapped it and left it open at the "rub" spot for the kicker....
Just looking at that pipe, it's the one I ran for many, many years,
and I do not remember it hitting like that,
I think this Denver;s frame is a little wider at the points I hung the muffs,
pushing that pipe out just enough to get this problem. Took a
couple of ball peen hammers and "made" some additional clearance for the kicker
Well, it's and 'individual"..........
The throttle and the front brake MC are a bit loose on the handlebar,
will need to work on that and see what I can do about the oil leaks...
The front brake mc tightened up nicely,
But the throttle was too loose at full tight....
There's a groove under the throttle clamp where I could drill and tap an
allen head bolt, that throttle won't slide off like it tried any more......
Not getting the stopping power I wanted on the front disk brake, not sure why,
will look at different pads with a more aggressive bite....
I love this bike, I have flown like a bird on this bike.....
I think we're about done here, if anything more comes up, I'll post it....
